boycott this *gestures*

I recently told myself that I would not buy any more games this year. I have spent way too much money in the last couple of weeks, and am in need of a cut-back. I have enough to hold me over through December, and this abstinence will give me time to actually finish what I already have. Vice City sits unfinished; I haven’t unlocked level 5 in Contra: SS; I have two XBox games that I haven’t even touched yet;…

The Big Deal™

Looking around the homestead, I can conclude that we are either: a) being infested by a swarm of mutant boxes; or, b) getting ready for The Big Move™. As of this Sunday, The Big Bank™ will officially own the house that we will be living in. I, personally, will have a stake in the basement. The space will be some three to four times larger than what current room, which is already of a decent size. I can’t confirm this…

big, black, and heavy

I’ve neglected to mention that I got an XBox, and XBox Live, over a week ago. I previously maintained that Panzer Dragoon Orta would win me over to this monstrously giant XBox machine, and while that is still partly true, I just couldn’t hold out much longer. The allure of online play was too strong. Sure, Sony has had the online adapter available for over a month now — but you’d be hard-pressed to find one. Sony fucked up big.…

Synergy Squared

If you were to ask me to list my top twenty 8-bit/16-bit games of all time, Square and Enix would have a combined five games (including the one collaborative title between the two, Crono Trigger.) With that, I’m not sure what to think of the Enix Square merger. It looks like a good deal for me on the surface, but it feels like it has a bitter centre that carries with it a deeper meaning — not unlike one of…

If you read this, you will die… eventually

Caught The Ring, and I thought it was thoroughly OK. Nothing worth raving about, but it did have certain nice aesthetics, and appropriately matching sounds, that gave it a decent sense of foreboding. The best part, by far, was the actual death video, and the way the imagery from it came to play throughtout the whole movie. It had a bit of a music video montage feel to it — it felt like parts of it were taken from Nine…

Prime Time Goodness

It’s finally here. I’ve been waiting for it since the E3 demo. Back then, I knew that Metroid Prime was going to be outstanding. Now that it’s finally out, I can safely and clearly say that it doesn’t disappoint in the slightest way. Prime doesn’t just live up to the storied Metroid legacy, it takes it to another level — and that’s saying a lot.

snow under sodium light

On days like this, I feel embarassed to be a driver in the Toronto area. This most obviously means that today is the first real snowfall of the season; and this most definitely means that people are driving like complete idiots. Yes, that’s snow on the ground: Welcome to Canada. It tends to snow here in the winter, and sometimes more than once. Get used to it. Adjust to it. If you are going to forget that snow is slippery…

Things that annoy me

This might seem really stupid and anal, but as far as computer terminology goes, the following is a major pet peeve of mine: Working with Flash as often as I do, I tend to hear the word “aliased” when mentioning pixel fonts. This annoys me immensely. There is no such word. I understand that it might be seen to be the opposite to anti-aliased, but it’s not. If a font is not anti-aliased, then it is regarded as being displayed…

31 reasons…

Here are 31 reasons supporting the case against MSIE. I finally caved and subscribed to GameSpot Complete. I’m still undecided as to whether it was a good idea. One of the “only on GameSpot Complete” features right now is the Zelda trailer… which has been available on the Zelda site for a week. Whoop-dee-doo. Farm Sluts is hilarious, well worth the time to watch it.

truer words…

I can’t remember where I saw the following expression first, but it has stuck with me. If you are 20 and not a liberal, you have no heart. If you are 40 and not a conservative, you have no brain. I don’t know what it is that you lack if you are 23 and ‘centrist,’ though I feel a bit dirty for using a word like centrist. More importantly, I can’t tell if this is satire. Also worth noting, the…

Simpsons tedium

Extremely over-used Simpsons reference #234: I, for one, welcome our *whatever* overlords. As far as any discussion areas are concerned, this one is #233.

Speaking of lists, I found these interesting: top ten digital photography tips and 101 things that Mozilla can do that IE can’t. Seen on Slashdot recently: ferrago.co.uk. Into the bloated favourites folder you go. Today is my sister’s birthday. She’s turning a scary old fifteen. I still remember the day she was born. I remember getting the newly released The Legend of Zelda that day as a gift (yes, video games are that engrained in my life, they are the…
