nowak vs. Capcom vs. SNK vs. online

As mentioned in a past comment, I do indeed have Capcom vs SNK 2 EO for the XBox. First, a little bit of history:

Excluding the Tekken series, I’m not the biggest fan of fighting games. Now, it hasn’t always been like this. I really enjoyed Street Fighter II Turbo back in the day, and I considered myself halfway decent. I used to play it late into the night with my then friends. It was the standard “loser passes the controller” setup that we had going, and the level of competition — as fierce as it was — was pretty even. Few people managed to hold onto the controller for more than three matches. Those were the times, but they are gone now. After that initial SF rush, I never played a 2D fighter again. Ever.

So, nearly a decade later, my first match with CvS2 felt familiar enough (Ken, Blanka, Guile). The gameplay is essentially the same as I remember it, including the quarter circle motion special moves, and my Ken combos. I’m still undecided as to whether this feels comfortable or dated. Everything else, though, felt over-whelming. I was soon humbled by all these new super combos, grooves, special techniques, and, most of all, CvS2’s vast number of playable characters.

Suffice it to say, when I took the game online, I got my ass handed to me. Multiple times. The play was mostly smooth, with no noticeable lag (I have only seen one place complain about the lag), so I can’t blame my connection for my lousy performances. It is also worth noting that the interface for Live is extra shitty, but this seems to be the norm rather than the exception for Live enabled games.

I think I’m going to spend a good chunk of the following week practicing. Hopefully, I’ll be able to win a single match at some point in time.
